The NITI Aayog Internship Scheme offers a unique opportunity for students from diverse academic backgrounds to gain practical exposure to the functioning of the Indian Government, especially in areas related to policy formulation and governance. The scheme is open to students pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, or research-level programs from recognized institutions in India and abroad.


About the Internship Scheme

The NITI Internship Scheme is designed to engage young academic talent in various divisions, verticals, and units of NITI Aayog. Interns contribute to the analytical and empirical work of the Aayog and gain insights into policy-making and governance.

Objective of the Program

The primary goal is to allow students to:

Eligibility Criteria

The internship is open to bona fide students of any recognized university/institution in India or abroad, based on the following categories:

  1. Undergraduate Students
    • Must have completed/appeared for 2nd year (4th semester) exams
    • Must have scored at least 85% in Class 12
  2. Postgraduate Students or PhD Scholars
    • Must have completed/appeared in the first year/second semester of their PG or are pursuing research
    • Should have scored at least 70% in Graduation
  3. Recent Graduates/Postgraduates Awaiting Higher Studies
    • Should have secured minimum 70% aggregate across all semesters
    • Gap between result declaration and internship start date should not exceed six months

Internship Duration & Availability

  • Minimum Duration: 6 weeks
  • Maximum Duration: 6 months
  • Availability: Open throughout the year based on the requirements of various departments
  • Interns who do not complete the minimum period will not receive a certificate.

How to Apply Online

Applications are accepted only between the 1st and 10th of every month.

Step-by-Step Application Guide:

  1. Visit https://workforindia.niti.gov.in/intern/InternshipEntry/homepage.aspx
  2. Fill the form online with the following details:
    • Name (as per 10th marksheet)
    • Father’s Name
    • Correspondence Address (with PIN Code)
    • Valid Mobile Number & Email ID
    • Date of Birth (DD/MM/YYYY)
    • Educational Qualification details:
      • Select status: Pursuing / Completed
      • Enter marks in percentage (convert CGPA if needed)
    • Select Area of Interest (Only one domain allowed)
  3. Upload Required Documents if prompted (PDF or scanned copies).
  4. Submit the Form and note your Registration Number.
  5. No need to send any physical documents.

Important Guidelines for Applicants

  • Only one application is allowed per financial year.
  • You must apply at least 2 months before the desired start date and not earlier than 6 months.
  • The system will reject applications not meeting eligibility automatically.
  • At the time of joining, original mark sheets and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your institute are mandatory.

  2. NOC from College/University in the following format:

This is to certify that Mr./Ms. [Name], a bonafide student of [College], enrolled in [Course Name], has the permission to undertake the internship at NITI Aayog from [start date] to [end date], and is not required to attend classes during this period.


Internship Completion Certificate

A certificate will be issued only if:

  • Intern completes minimum 75% attendance
  • A final report/paper is submitted to the respective vertical
  • The report is approved by the supervisor

No extension or certification is granted if attendance falls short.


Selection Process

  • Applications are made visible to heads of NITI verticals who shortlist candidates.
  • Each vertical can select up to 3 interns at a time (extendable with CEO’s approval).
  • Final selection rests with the division head and is non-negotiable.
  • Selected interns may be asked to email their NOC before getting the offer letter.
  • Final verification of documents happens at the time of joining.

Attendance & Conduct

  • Interns must mark attendance daily.
  • A minimum of 75% attendance is mandatory.
  • Misconduct or discrepancies may lead to immediate cancellation.

Facilities Provided by NITI Aayog

While the internship is unpaid, the following will be provided:

  • Workspace
  • Internet access
  • Necessary logistical support

Interns must carry their own laptops.
